Not that the following is in any way related to this book being published in French. But does anyone else have the feeling the Powers might have had a little inspiration from the movie Disclosure (starring Michael Douglas and Demi Moore). The movie takes place in Seattle (as does half the book), around a company producing, well, mostly CD ROM-players but also equipment and software for virtual reality applications. When Douglas' head of engineering enters the VR-application, it's immense and has the interior of an old palace, which reminded me of the mosque they're VR-building in the book. I couldn't google out if he's mentioned the movie as an inspiration - and maybe that would make him seem to low-brow. Well, don't know if there's anything in it, I just thought it was funny.
